On the Juneau Icefield, students become active field researchers. Working alongside glaciologists, they conduct glacial measurements, collect climate data, observe weather patterns, and integrate Indigenous knowledge into scientific understanding. This immersive experience in active climate science merges rigorous field methodology, authentic research questions, and environmental stewardship—preparing students to understand and address climate change at its source.
Students Will:
• Conduct scientific field measurements aligned with NGSS standards
• Interpret climate change indicators and glacial dynamics
• Integrate Indigenous perspectives into scientific understanding
• Apply field safety and advanced teamwork in dynamic environments
• Connect climate science to policy and public communication
• Demonstrate resilience, problem-solving, and adaptive thinking
• Reflect on personal role in environmental stewardship
Eligibility:
• Principal-nominated juniors or seniors
• Strong interest in science, climate, or environmental topics
• Application + teacher recommendation required
• Interview with JIRP director required
• Passport required
• Physical fitness for field research environment
Why This Program?
Provides rare access to active climate science while centering Indigenous knowledge and environmental stewardship. Students return understanding climate change not as an abstract concept, but as a lived reality they've personally investigated.
